How do these
historical submarines become cutaways?
The
process is fascinating and truly amazing to see!
Each creation begins with locating original design materials -
original construction blueprints, photographs, deck plans, books and
even advertising brochures are used to guarantee the accuracy of each
cutaway.
The
artist first creates a three-dimensional model to capture the essence
of the object, while maintaining the structural integrity of the wood.
A set of six final line drawings are then created which serve as a
blueprint for the cutaway.
Select micro-cut woods are scored and cut, leaving behind extremely
fragile slices which represent the original line drawings.
Each individually cut layer is carefully checked for accuracy and
structural integrity as the artist assembles them by hand into a
three-dimensional cutaway. Once assembled, the cutaway is matted and
sealed into a museum quality frame. |
